Brownfield Lady Cubs
The holidays are over and tournament season is in the books—now it’s time for the Brownfield Lady Cubs to turn their full attention to district play.
The Lady Cubs entered the Christmas break coming off their second district loss to No. 22 Denver City. Following the break, Brownfield competed in the 65th Annual Caprock Classic, where they were placed in the Advanced Graphix Bracket and faced a challenging slate of opponents.
In the opening round, Brownfield took on No. 20 Borden County and secured an impressive 45–29 victory over the Lady Coyotes. That win advanced the Lady Cubs to the second round, where they faced Iowa Park, the largest 3A school in the state. Brownfield battled through overtime and came away with a hard-fought 58–49 win.
With that victory, the Lady Cubs advanced to the championship side of the bracket and met No. 1 (2A) Panhandle in the semifinals. Despite a strong effort, Brownfield fell to the Lady Panthers. The loss sent the Lady Cubs into the third-place game against No. 17 (2A) Hale Center, where they came up short once again, falling 48–33.
Brownfield then traveled to Hale Center for a non-district matchup against Clarendon, where the Lady Cubs were defeated 54–34.
Now, Brownfield returns to district competition this week. On Tuesday, January 6, the Lady Cubs will host Odessa Compass. Compass enters the matchup 1–2 in district play and 9–8 overall. Their district losses came against No. 2 Coahoma (51–29) and Stanton (34–24), while their lone district victory was a 41–33 win over Crane.
To close out the week, Brownfield will travel down Highway 137 to face No. 10 Lamesa in another District 3-3A showdown. The Golden Tors are currently 1–1 in district play and boast a 19–3 overall record. Lamesa’s only district loss came against No. 2 Coahoma (51–29), while they earned a convincing 61–35 win over Crane.
With district standings tightening, this week’s games will be crucial as the Lady Cubs look to gain momentum heading into the heart of district play.
Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs
The No. 8 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs are coming out of the Christmas holiday and tournament season in impressive fashion, riding a seven-game winning streak. Coach McPherson led the Cubs to Corpus Christi for the Arnold Flores & Floyd Campbell Holiday Tournament, where Brownfield went a perfect 4-0 to claim the tournament championship.
The Runnin’ Cubs are also 1-0 in district play after opening with a dominant 55-27 victory over Denver City on Friday, December 19. With the combination of a district-opening win and a commanding tournament performance, Brownfield has plenty of momentum as they prepare for the heart of district action.
Next up, the Runnin’ Cubs will turn their attention to Tuesday night’s home matchup against the Odessa Compass Academy Cougars. The Cougars enter the contest undefeated at 15-0 overall and 1-0 in district play, coming off a 59-27 win over Stanton.
On Friday night, Brownfield will hit the road to face Lamesa, which stands at 10-4 overall and 1-0 in district after defeating Crane 55-33. With two tough district opponents ahead, the Runnin’ Cubs will look to keep their winning streak alive and continue their strong start to district play.
DISTRICT 3-3A STANDINGS
Meadow Lady Broncos
The Meadow Lady Broncos are putting together a solid season, currently sitting at 12-8 overall. Early in the year, Meadow found itself ranked in the Top 25 for several weeks. A four-game losing streak in late November and early December slowed that momentum, but the Lady Broncos have managed to stay competitive throughout the season.
After nearly two weeks off, Meadow returned to action by hosting the No. 16 Guthrie Lady Jaguars, falling 74-37. Now, with a fresh week ahead, the Lady Broncos look to regroup and get back on track.
Meadow will return to the hardwood Tuesday night at home against an always-tough 2A Sudan squad. While the Hornettes are 7-17 overall, eight of their losses have come against Top 25 opponents, making them a much tougher team than their record indicates.
To close out the week, the Lady Broncos will open district play Friday night at home against cross-county rival Wellman-Union. The Lady Cats enter the matchup with a similar 11-8 overall record. Friday night’s contest could carry major implications for district standings and playoff seeding.
Meadow Broncos
The Meadow Broncos find themselves in a similar position as the Lady Broncos this season. Sitting at 13-8 overall, Meadow has experienced its share of ups and downs. Coach Alaniz and his squad benefited from the holiday break and returned to action on January 2 by hosting Guthrie, earning a 52-38 win to get back in the win column after a loss to O’Donnell two weeks earlier.
This week, the Broncos remain at home for a pair of games, beginning Tuesday night against the Grady Wildcats. While Grady has struggled to find consistency this season, the Wildcats are traditionally a tough regional opponent, making them a team Meadow cannot overlook. Still, the Broncos will look to take advantage of the opportunity and secure another home victory.
On Friday night, Meadow stays home once again to face O’Donnell for the third time this season. The Eagles have taken the first two meetings, winning 48-42 and 54-34, including the matchup just before the Christmas break. Meadow will be looking to defend its home court and turn the tide in the season series.
Wellman-Union Lady Cats
The Wellman-Union Lady Cats are playing strong basketball right now, riding a four-game winning streak. They came out of the holiday break on fire with an 84-72 win over 2A Seagraves, followed by a 50-41 victory against longtime rival Dawson.
This week, the Lady Cats have just one game on the schedule, but it’s a big one. On Friday night, Wellman-Union will travel to Meadow to open district play against their cross-county rival. Both teams enter the matchup with similar records, as the Lady Cats sit at 11-8 overall.
With district play beginning and rivalry bragging rights on the line, the Meadow Gym is expected to be packed and loud Friday night.
Wellman-Union Wildcats
The Wildcats enter the week with a nearly even record at 9-8 overall, but they carry momentum with a three-game winning streak. Coming out of the break, the Wildcats faced a tough Dawson squad and avenged an earlier-season loss with a 46-43 victory.
Like the Lady Cats, the Wildcats have just one game on the schedule this week. That matchup comes Tuesday night as they travel to Petersburg to take on the Buffaloes. With their recent momentum, the Wildcats will look to continue their winning streak on the road.
