UIL Realignment Is Coming—and It Could Reshape West Texas

Monday, February 2, 2026, is the day. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) will release its biennium realignments on Feb. 2, with coaches and superintendents gathering at regional Education Service Centers to pick up packets and learn their new districts. Since 2013, UIL has offered a preview by publishing classification cutoffs and football division cutoffs, but the actual district alignments are not released until February of every even-numbered year.

How UIL sets the numbers

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires every school to submit enrollment figures through the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS) on the last Friday in October—known as the “snapshot date.” This cycle’s snapshot date was October 31, 2025. UIL uses those enrollment totals to place public and charter schools into classifications (conferences) and districts.

UIL currently has six classifications (1A through 6A). In football, 1A through 5A are divided into Division I and Division II at the district level. In 6A, the division split occurs at the start of the playoffs.

Terry County numbers: where each school lands

The three school districts in Terry County—Brownfield ISD (BISD), Meadow ISD (MISD), and Wellman-Union CISD (WUCISD)—already know their classification and football division based on enrollments:

  • BISD: 478 students (down nearly 20 from the previous realignment)
  • MISD: 53 students (down 15 from the previous realignment)
  • WUCISD: 47 students (down from 65 in the last realignment)

UIL raised the top cutoff for 3A, and the new 3A enrollment range is 246–544. The top number increased (as rumored), and the bottom cutoff dropped from 254 to 246.

Football division cutoffs also shifted in 1A and 3A:

  • 3A Division I: now 367–544 (previously 369–544)
  • 3A Division II: now 246–366
  • 1A Division I: now 57.6–104 (previously 61.5–104)
  • 1A Division II: 57.5 and below

What that means locally:

  • Brownfield will remain 3A and stay 3A Division I in football.
  • Meadow and Wellman-Union will remain 1A, and both will drop to 1A Division II in football.

In 3A—specifically Region I—several shifts are expected this cycle. Perryton was considered a possible drop from 4A to 3A, but the Rangers reportedly finished six students above the cutoff and will remain in 4A. Tulia will drop to 2A, while Iowa Park will move back up to 4A. Odessa Compass Academy and Wall will both move up to 3A Division I, while River Road will fall to 3A Division II. Comanche, which moved up to 3A Division I in the last realignment, is will also drop back down to 3A Division II. Anthony has posted 2A numbers again—after spending the past two realignments in 2A—but has elected to compete in 3A due to travel concerns. Tornillo, which opted out of football the past two seasons, is expected to drop to 2A.

Currently, Brownfield’s football district is District 2-3A Division I, along with Denver City, Kermit, and Lamesa. Brownfield volleyball competes in District 3-3A with Coahoma, Crane, Denver City, Lamesa, and Odessa Compass Academy. Basketball, baseball, and softball—along with the district’s spring sports and academic competitions—are also in District 3-3A, which includes Coahoma, Crane, Denver City, Lamesa, Odessa Compass Academy, and Stanton.

In 1A—particularly across Regions I and II—several changes are expected this cycle. In football, Aspermont, Jayton, Klondike, Sands, and Whitharral will move up to 1A Division I, while Sterling City is expected to drop from 2A down to 1A Division I. On the other end, Lorenzo and Marfa are to move down into 1A Division II, and Boys Ranch is expected to move back up to 2A. Locally, Meadow and Wellman-Union currently share the same football district with Borden County, O’Donnell, and Whiteface. Wellman-Union’s volleyball district includes Grady, Klondike, Loop, and Wilson, while Meadow and Wellman-Union also share the same basketball district—along with spring sports and academic competitions—with Amherst, Anton, Cotton Center, and Whitharral.

Here are my mock-ups and predictions for where UIL will place schools in the upcoming realignment. For 2A through 6A, these projections cover Region I only. For 1A, they include Regions I and II.
