DPS Offers Winter Weather Safety Reminders

As parts of Texas brace for wintry weather, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding residents that extreme cold, freezing rain, ice, and snow can create dangerous conditions for both drivers and pedestrians. DPS is urging Texans to prepare in advance and use extra caution as conditions change.

“Texans know all too well that our weather can shift in a matter of minutes—from sunshine to sleet or worse,” said Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee. “Preparation makes all the difference. A few simple steps today can keep you and your family safe when conditions change unexpectedly.”

Prepare Your Vehicle and Emergency Kit

DPS recommends taking time now to check your vehicle’s readiness for winter travel. That includes inspecting the battery, windshield wipers, tire pressure and tread, and topping off fluid levels. Drivers should also ensure door and trunk locks are properly lubricated to help prevent freezing.

Officials also encourage keeping a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle, including warm clothing, food, water, a cell phone charger or backup battery, and basic first-aid supplies.

Winter Weather Road Safety Tips

DPS shared several reminders for anyone who may need to travel during winter weather:

  • Monitor local forecasts and check the latest conditions from the National Weather Service before traveling.
  • Avoid driving when sleet, freezing rain, or snow is expected. Track road conditions through Drive Texas or by calling (800) 452-9292.
  • If travel is necessary, allow extra time and share your route and plans with a friend or family member.
  • Drive slowly on icy roads and increase following distance to allow more room to stop.
  • Avoid using cruise control in poor driving conditions.
  • Keep your gas tank full before heading out.
  • Use extra caution on bridges and overpasses, which often ice over before the rest of the roadway.
  • Watch for downed trees and power lines. If traffic lights are out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Winter Weather Home Safety Tips

DPS also encouraged Texans to take steps at home to stay safe and prevent weather-related emergencies:

  • Use an all-hazards weather radio for warnings, watches, and updated forecasts.
  • Sign up for alerts through your local emergency notification system.
  • Insulate outdoor faucets and pipes near exterior walls.
  • Ensure furnaces, heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves are clean, ventilated, and working properly.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from walls and combustible materials such as furniture and bedding, and turn them off when sleeping or away from home.
  • Never operate a generator or fuel-powered device indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Consider installing a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Never use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Check on friends, neighbors, and family members who may be at higher risk due to age or health conditions.
  • Stock up on essentials, including firewood, canned goods, bottled water, and medication.

DPS is urging Texans to stay vigilant, remain prepared, and use caution as winter weather develops across the state.
