Wellman-Union Lady Cats Sweep Grady to Claim Bi-District Championship, Set Sights on White Deer

Lady Cats continue playoff run with dominant three-set victory; Area Championship showdown set for Tuesday at Wayland Baptist University

The Wellman-Union Lady Cats are moving on in the Class 1A volleyball playoffs after delivering an impressive performance Saturday morning, October 31, sweeping the Grady Lady Wildcats in three straight sets to capture the Bi-District Championship.

The Lady Cats came out ready to compete and never let up, defeating Grady 25-18, 25-16, and 25-18. The victory not only secured a postseason championship but also showcased the confidence, determination, and teamwork that have developed throughout the season.

Wellman-Union head coach Mandy Carter praised her team’s effort and execution, particularly on the defensive side of the court.

“We came ready to compete Saturday morning and delivered an outstanding performance against Grady,” Carter said. “The girls stepped up to the challenge in a big way, playing with confidence, determination, and intensity from start to finish.”

According to Carter, the Lady Cats’ defense played a significant role in controlling the match, while the offense capitalized on opportunities at the net.

“Our defense was phenomenal, consistently making big plays and keeping us in control of the game,” Carter explained. “Offensively, our hitters executed exactly what we needed, making smart decisions and taking advantage of opportunities at the net.”

The Lady Cats showed their ability to stay composed and execute their game plan through all three sets. Rather than letting Grady build momentum, Wellman-Union consistently responded with strong defense and timely offense.

Carter said the performance capped the team’s hard work and improvement throughout the season.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way these girls responded to the challenge,” Carter said. “They trusted each other, stayed focused, and played together as a team. It was a great example of the hard work and growth we’ve seen throughout the season coming together when it matters most.”

Lady Cats Turn Attention to White Deer in Area Championship

Little time remains for celebration as Wellman-Union prepares for its next postseason challenge.

The Lady Cats will face the White Deer Does in the Area Championship on Tuesday, November 3, at 6:00 p.m. at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.

White Deer enters the matchup with an overall record of 6-20, while Wellman-Union brings momentum from its convincing Bi-District victory.

Despite White Deer’s losing overall record, the Does earned a district championship and received a first-round playoff bye.

Four of White Deer’s six victories came in district competition against Wildorado and Channing. Groom was also scheduled to compete in District 2-1A but did not field a volleyball team.

With White Deer advancing directly into the Area round, Tuesday’s contest will be the Does’ first postseason match, while Wellman-Union will be coming off its three-set victory over Grady.

Strength of Schedule Could Favor Wellman-Union

One of the more interesting aspects of Tuesday’s matchup is the considerable difference in the two teams’ strength of schedule.

Throughout the regular season, Wellman-Union challenged itself against numerous larger schools, including opponents from Class 2A and Class 3A.

The Lady Cats faced nine Class 2A opponents and won five of those contests. They also competed against six Class 3A teams, earning three victories.

That means Wellman-Union collected eight victories against higher-classification schools, providing valuable experience against larger programs.

White Deer, meanwhile, faced eight Class 2A opponents and lost all eight contests.

Although records and strength of schedule do not guarantee postseason success, the Lady Cats’ experience against tougher competition could help as playoff pressure increases.

The two teams have only one common opponent this season: Wildorado.

Wellman-Union opened its season against Wildorado and earned a 2-0 victory. White Deer faced Wildorado twice during district play and won both meetings.

Beyond those matchups, the two programs have traveled different paths to reach Tuesday’s Area Championship.

For Wellman-Union, the experience of facing larger schools throughout the season could be an important factor against a White Deer squad that has struggled outside district competition.

Still, the Lady Cats know that every opponent presents a new challenge once the playoffs begin.

Quick Turnaround, Same Determination

With just a few days between postseason contests, Carter said the Lady Cats must remain focused on preparation and execution.

“We now face a quick turnaround as we prepare for another tough opponent,” Carter said. “With limited time between games, our focus will be on making the necessary adjustments, staying disciplined, and carrying Saturday’s momentum into the next round.”

After a strong performance against Grady, the Lady Cats will look to keep the same intensity and confidence that helped them claim the Bi-District crown.

Another victory would send Wellman-Union into the Regional Semifinal round and move the Lady Cats one step closer to a deeper postseason run.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to keep competing and look forward to another great battle as we continue our playoff run,” Carter said.
