Terry County Football Recap and Preview

Friday Night Lights Continue in Terry County as Meadow Broncos Prepare for Dawson Dragons

Unfortunately, the Brownfield Cubs will not get another opportunity this season to play football. Coach Lawrence Johnson said he is proud of the team, and though they were outmatched for most of the season, he added, “The team continued to fight until the season was over.”

Friday night lights are not over just yet in Terry County, as the Meadow Broncos look to close out their regular season on a winning note when they travel to Welch to take on the Dawson Dragons on Friday, November 6, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos enter the contest looking to bounce back from a hard-fought 73-56 loss to county rival Wellman-Union last Friday night in a game that decided the District 4-1A Division II championship.

The Wildcats’ victory was historic, as Wellman-Union secured its first district football championship in 21 years, dating back to 2005.

The rivalry matchup lived up to its billing, with both teams trading blows throughout much of the contest. Midway through the third quarter, the game remained extremely competitive, with neither team able to establish a comfortable advantage. At that point, it seemed the outcome might come down to whichever team had the ball last.

However, Wellman-Union eventually pulled away behind a remarkable individual performance from Wildcat standout Gabe Quintanilla.

Quintanilla delivered an incredible offensive performance, rushing for 449 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also contributed through the air, throwing for 56 yards and another touchdown. In all, Quintanilla accounted for 505 yards of offense and 11 touchdowns, helping propel the Wildcats to the district championship.

Despite the disappointing loss, Meadow still has unfinished business before turning its full attention to postseason play.

Broncos head coach Blake Jackson said his team remains focused on finishing the regular season strong and building momentum heading into the playoffs.

“We’re looking to finish district strong as we get ready to head into the playoffs. The goal is the same as it always is: go 1-0 this week,” Jackson said.

Jackson also emphasized the importance of fundamentals and limiting mistakes against Dawson.

“Execute and take care of the football is our main priority,” Jackson added.

For Meadow, Friday night’s matchup provides an opportunity to regain confidence, clean up mistakes from the Wellman-Union contest and establish momentum heading into the postseason.

Wellman-Union Enjoys Bye Week Before Playoffs

While the Broncos prepare for their final regular-season contest, the Wellman-Union Wildcats will enjoy some much-deserved rest.

The Wildcats’ scheduled bye week falls during the final week of district play, meaning their regular season has officially concluded.

After claiming the district championship, Wellman-Union can now turn its attention entirely toward the postseason, using the additional preparation time to recover, review film and prepare for its first-round playoff opponent.

The Wildcats will enter the playoffs as District 4-1A Division II champions, while Meadow is also preparing for postseason action.

District 3-1A Division II Playoff Picture Still Unsettled

Although both Terry County programs are preparing for playoff football, neither Meadow nor Wellman-Union knows its first-round opponent just yet.

The playoff picture in District 3-1A Division II remains unsettled heading into the final Friday of the regular season.

Anton currently leads the district standings but still has a crucial matchup remaining against Hart.

A Hart victory over Anton would create a three-way tie involving Anton, Hart and Lazbuddie, potentially complicating the final district standings and playoff seeding.

Lazbuddie played a major role in shaking up the district race last Friday night when it knocked off No. 6-ranked Hart, handing the Longhorns their first loss of the season.

That upset added another layer of uncertainty to an already competitive district race.

The outcome of Friday night’s Anton-Hart matchup, along with the applicable district tiebreaker procedures, will help determine the final postseason matchups.

One More Friday Night Before the Playoffs

For Terry County football fans, the excitement of six-man football is far from finished.

Wellman-Union has already secured a district championship and awaits its postseason opponent, while Meadow has one more opportunity to take the field under the Friday night lights before the playoffs begin.

The Broncos know that postseason success starts with taking care of business in the present, and Coach Jackson’s message is simple: execute, protect the football and find a way to go 1-0.

With the playoffs just around the corner, both Terry County programs will be looking to make their mark in the Class 1A Division II postseason.
