Suspect allegedly fired at officers during late-night chase along U.S. Highway 62/82 before rollover crash in Terry County
Late Monday night, a traffic stop in Lubbock escalated into a high-speed pursuit and officer-involved shooting situation that ended in a fatal crash west of Meadow in Terry County.
According to preliminary information, at approximately 11:35 p.m. on May 5, 2026, an officer with the Lubbock Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver reportedly refused to stop and fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit that began within the City of Lubbock.
Authorities said the chase continued westbound on U.S. Highway 62/82 in Lubbock County and continued on into Hockley County, through Ropesville and into Terry County west of Meadow. Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety joined the pursuit as it moved further into the county.
According to preliminary reports from involved officers, the suspect was traveling at high rates of speed during the pursuit. Investigators also stated that the suspect discharged a firearm multiple times at pursuing law enforcement officers while fleeing along U.S. Highway 62/82.
The pursuit came to an end approximately one and a half miles west of Meadow in Terry County when a DPS trooper executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on the suspect vehicle. Authorities said the maneuver caused the vehicle to spin into the center median, where it rolled over before coming to rest.
The suspect driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The Terry County Sheriff’s Office, Brownfield Fire & Rescue, Meadow Fire Department, and BRMC EMS responded to the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
