Two contested primary races in Terry County

The deadline for incumbents and new candidates to file for county, state, and federal offices was Monday, December 8, 2025, at 6:00 pm. The Texas General Primaries are scheduled for March 3, 2026. In Terry County, the offices open for filing include County Judge, Justice of the Peace, District Clerk, County Clerk, County Treasurer, and Commissioners for Precincts 2 and 4.

Several additional offices will be on the ballot in 2026, including Texas Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Commissioner of the General Land Office, Commissioner of Agriculture, one of the three Texas Railroad Commissioners, four members of the Texas Supreme Court, and three members of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

Other key races include U.S. House District 19, Texas House District 84, and Texas State Senate District 28, all of which represent Terry County.

Terry County Judge Tony Serbantez has filed for re-election, and his race will be uncontested in both the March primary and the November 2026 General Election. Justice of the Peace Judge Angie Garza has also filed for re-election and will likewise run unopposed in both elections.

The same is true for District Clerk Tiffany O’Briant, County Treasurer Andrea Perry, and County Commissioner Precinct 2 Richard Cavazos. All three incumbents filed for re-election and will remain unopposed in the primaries and the General Election in November 2026.

NOTE: Candidates who are unopposed in the primary will be the party’s nominee. Also, since no Democrat or independent candidates filed, all county offices will be unopposed in the November General Election.

However, two county races will be contested in the Republican Primary on March 3, 2026.

Commissioner Precinct 4 has drawn three candidates:

  • Incumbent Ernesto Elizardo
  • Terry County employee Elvis Rodriguez
  • Lubbock Fire Department Captain Michael Dawson

To avoid a runoff, one candidate must receive 50% plus one vote. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two vote-getters will face each other in a May 2026 runoff.

The other contested race is the countywide County Clerk race. Current County Clerk Kim Carter did not file for re-election and will retire on December 31, 2026, leaving the position open. Chief Deputy Clerk Nancy Gonzales and Deputy Clerk Jeff Davis have both filed to run for the seat.

At the statewide level, the Texas Governor’s race has drawn large fields in both major parties.

On the Republican primary ballot, 11 candidates are vying for the nomination in the November General Election:
Greg Abbott (incumbent), R.F. Achgill, Evelyn Brooks, Pete Chambers, Charles Crouch, Arturo Espinosa, Mark Goloby, Kenneth Hyde, Stephen Samuelson, Ronnie Tullos, and Nathaniel Welch.

On the Democratic primary ballot, 12 candidates are competing for their party’s nomination:
Patricia Abrego, Chris Bell, Bobby Cole, Carlton Hart, Gina Hinojosa, Jose Navarro Balbuena, Nick Pappas, Faizan Syed, Meagan Tehseldar, Zach Vance, Angela Villescaz, and Andrew White.

For the Republican primary for Lieutenant Governor of Texas there are three candidates. Incumbent Dan Patrick, Timothy Mabry, and Esala Wueschner. The Demcratic party fielded one candidate in the primary which is Vikki Goodwin.
