Playoffs begin tonight for all three Terry County girls’ basketball teams. It’s one-and-done if you don’t win. The Runnin’ Cubs are done in district and stayed at #5 in 3A. Check out this week’s Terry County High School Basketball Roundup.
Brownfield Lady Cubs (7-5, 10-21)
The Lady Cubs concluded their district season with a record of 7-5, tying for third place and securing their spot in the Class 3A DI basketball playoffs. Coach Ja’lee Carver opted to give the top seed to Denver City instead of playing a seeding game, which could have risked an injury to one of the players. As a result, Brownfield will face Kermit on Monday evening at Klondike, with the game set to tip off at 5:30 PM. From this point on, every game is a single-elimination matchup; if you lose, your season ends, but if you win, you advance to the next round.
The Lady Cubs are positioned on the bottom side of the bracket in Region I DI. If they win on Monday night, they could potentially play against #20 Shallowater. If they manage to win against the Fillies, which is very possible, they would likely face #1 Jim Ned in the next round. However, the Lady Cubs need to concentrate on one game at a time. Kermit finished the district season with a record of 7-1, winning District 4-3A and averaging 60 points per game while allowing only 25.
It’s worth noting that UIL had five schools in District 4-3A, compared to seven schools in District 3-3A. Each team in District 3-3A played two more teams and four more games in total. Additionally, District 4-3A was the only district in Class 3A with five schools, one of which (Anthony) chose to move up from 2A to 3A due to travel issues. For reference, Anthony, Texas, is the westernmost city in Texas, located northwest of El Paso.
Throughout the district season, the Lady Cubs averaged around 44 points per game while allowing an average of 45 points.

Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (12-0, 23-7)
The Runnin’ Cubs have had their most successful regular and district season since the 2015-2016 season when Brownfield won the State Title. They finished the district with a perfect 12-0 record and an overall record of 24-7, with all their losses coming from ranked teams or larger schools. Currently, they are on a 15-game winning streak.
The playoffs for the boys’ teams will not begin until February 17th, giving Brownfield several days off. Coach McPherson is hoping to schedule a practice game ahead of their matchup against Kermit in the bi-district round, and updates should be coming soon.
The Runnin’ Cubs will be placed in the top portion of the Class 3A Region I-DI bracket. This positioning could lead to a potential matchup against either Littlefield or Bushland, whom the Runnin’ Cubs previously defeated 59-46 on December 27, 2024. Like the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs will also face Kermit in their bi-district matchup.
The Yellow Jackets currently have a district record of 3-4 and an overall record of 7-15, with one game remaining. Throughout the season, Kermit has averaged 48 points per game while allowing 58. In contrast, the Runnin’ Cubs have averaged 70 points per game, allowing only 53.

The Lady Broncos concluded the district season with a 6-4 record, bringing their overall record to 18-10. They will face Grady in a bi-district matchup on Monday night in Lamesa, with a tip-off scheduled for 6:30 PM. Meadow enters the playoffs as the top seed from District 5-1A in Division I. Grady finished the district with a 5-5 record and has an overall record of 12-16.
Wellman-Union Lady Cats (5-5, 15-13)
The Lady Cats are heading to the playoffs as the second seed from District 5-1A in Division I. They concluded their district season with a 5-5 record and an overall record of 15-13. In the playoffs, they will face #14 Borden County at Lubbock Christian High School on Monday night at 6:00 PM. The Lady Coyotes have an impressive overall record of 24-8 and went undefeated in their district with a 10-0 record. Notably, seven of Borden County’s eight losses have come from top-25 teams, including several that are ranked in the top 5. Their only loss to a team outside the top 25 was against 3A Slaton, which is also in the playoffs.

Meadow Broncos (4-5, 12-17)
The Broncos experienced back-to-back losses last week, falling to Amherst with a score of 55-40 and losing to their cross-county rival, Wellman-Union, 68-64. As a result, Meadow now holds the sole fourth-place position in the standings. However, if they lose again and Wellman-Union wins on Tuesday evening, both teams will be tied for that fourth place.
Meadow will head north to Anton to face the Bulldogs in their final district game. In their previous matchup at Meadow, the Broncos secured a victory with a score of 39-34. This upcoming game will be more challenging since it will be an away game. Since their last meeting, Meadow has recorded a 1-3 record, while Anton has improved to 2-2.
Wellman-Union Wildcats (3-6, 10-15)
The Wildcats had a successful week, going 2-0, although they only played one official game due to Cotton Center’s forfeit. In their last home game of the season, they triumphed over their cross-county rival, Meadow, with a score of 68-64.
Next, the Wildcats will travel north to face off against #13 Whitharral. If Wellman-Union wins this game and Meadow loses on Tuesday night, both teams will be tied for fourth place. However, if the Wildcats lose and Meadow also loses, then Meadow will secure a playoff spot while Wellman-Union will not. If both teams win, Wellman-Union will still miss out on the playoffs. In their previous matchup, Whitharral dominated the Wildcats, winning 79-25.
