Brownfield Lady Cubs: 7-5, 12-20, Bi-District Champions & Area Championship Finalist
The Lady Cubs’ playoff run came to an end last Tuesday night with a 66-41 loss to #21 Shallowater. These young ladies learned valuable lessons throughout the season, demonstrated resilience, and grew stronger as the games progressed. Despite facing criticism from those who doubted them, the Lady Cubs showed their determination and willingness to compete.
The team finished the season with a record of 12-20 and 7-5 in district play. Notably, of their 20 losses, nine were against teams ranked in the top 25, including one against the #1 team. Additionally, two losses (don’t include the ranked teams) were to current regional semifinalists, and six came from playoff-bound squads. This is an impressive feat for a young team under a new coach.
Coach Ja’lee Carver said, “Year 1 is officially in the books. This year has been challenging to say the least. Behind closed doors, we as a program endured so much: individually, whole group, and as a community. We lost some along the way, we gained a few to help us press forward. One thing I can say is Our God makes NO mistakes. He wrote the end before the beginning. He has paved the way of this program as we plowed to bear fruit. Being a first year head coach comes with some expectations. Most want to see how you answer to the call of structuring a culture, setbacks, and standards. What I can say boldly is I answered in every which way. My assistants clapped back right beside me. The athletes that set the foundation for years to come just started a legacy that many wish to be apart of. I am so thankful for the platform that God has blessed me with to shine His light and give His glory to those around me. Year 2 loading, I hope y’all are ready”
Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (12-0, 24-8)
After some much-needed time off, the Runnin’ Cubs played a pickup game against Odessa Permian on Friday but unfortunately did not win. However, Brownfield is still set to move on to the postseason and will face the Kermit Yellow Jackets in the Bi-District round on Tuesday night, February 18th, in Andrews, with a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM. Over the last decade, the Runnin’ Cubs and Kermit have faced each other 12 times, with Brownfield leading the series 11-1. The two programs have also met in the playoffs five times in the last ten seasons, with the Runnin’ Cubs holding a record of 4-1 in those matchups.
Both teams have faced three of the same opponents this season. Brownfield secured a victory against Andrews, winning 79-55, while Kermit lost to Andrews with a score of 55-42. The other two common opponents were Denver City and Odessa Compass. Kermit managed to defeat Denver City 48-47 but lost to Odessa Compass by a narrow margin of 46-45. The Runnin’ Cubs faced both Denver City and Odessa Compass in their district games, winning all four contests. In the first round against Denver City, Brownfield triumphed with a score of 86-47, and in the second round, they won in a thrilling double overtime match, 77-74. Against Odessa Compass, Brownfield won the first round convincingly, 79-45, and followed up with another strong performance in the second round, winning 83-37.
The Yellow Jackets secured the third-place spot in District 4-3A, earning them the “runner-up” seed in Division I. They have an overall record of 8-15 and finished the district season with a 4-4 record. Kermit averaged 48 points per game throughout the regular and district seasons while allowing an average of 58 points. On the other hand, the Runnin’ Cubs have an impressive overall record of 24-8 and went undefeated in District 3-3A with a 12-0 record. Brownfield is averaging 70 points per game and allowing 54. Despite the Runnin’ Cubs’ strong performance on paper, Kermit is expected to come out strong, aiming to disrupt Brownfield’s offensive rhythm. Kermit likely took note of the previous matchup between Denver City and Brownfield and is determined to upset the #5 team in the state.
Meadow Lady Broncos: 6-4, 18-12 Bi-District Champions & Area Championship Finalist
The Lady Broncos had a great season. Like the Lady Cubs, Meadow has a young team. Unfortunately, they lost in the Area round to Spur with a score of 50-42. What was remarkable about the game was that the Lady Broncos were down 33-15 at halftime. However, they mounted an impressive comeback in the third quarter, going on a 17-1 run and closing the gap to 34-32 by the end of the period. In the fourth quarter, Spur outpaced the Lady Broncos, outscoring them 16-10 and ultimately winning the game 50-42.
Of the Lady Broncos’ 12 losses this season, four were to top-25 teams, one was to a regional semifinalist, and four other teams made it to the playoffs, with two reaching the Area round. The Lady Broncos will be back next season with four returning starters, along with some talented players coming off the bench who can make an impact.
Meadow Broncos (4-6, 8-18)
The Meadow Broncos had a few days off to prepare for the bi-district round of playoffs, which will take place on Tuesday night, February 18th, at Tahoka, with a 7:00 PM tip-off. Currently, they are entering the playoffs on a four-game losing streak. Meadow secured the second seed in Division I out of District 5-1A and will face #25 Klondike, who recently suffered a late loss to the fifth-place team, Grady, in District 6-1A. Throughout the season, Klondike averaged 60 points per game while allowing 47 points per game. In contrast, Meadow averaged 41 points per game and allowed 49 points. To achieve victory, the Broncos will need to play exceptionally well. Klondike is a very physical team, and Meadow will need to draw fouls from the Cougars to have a chance at winning.
Wellman-Union Lady Cats: 5-5, 15-13 Class 1A Playoff Contender
The Lady Cats had a good season and faced some very tough teams along the way. They were playoff contenders but unfortunately lost in the first round to #14 Borden County, which notably upset #1 Valley in the area round. Although the season is over, there is much to look forward to as they have a strong bench coming back next season.
Wellman-Union Wildcats: 3-7, 10-19 No playoff appearance
The Wildcats came close to making the playoffs; however, losses to Amherst and one game against Meadow hindered their chances. Of their 19 losses, 14 were against teams that qualified for the playoffs, including two against a top-25 contender. This season will see four seniors graduate, leaving some young players who will need to step up and fill the gaps next year.
