Lady Cub Basketball ready to make noise this season

It’s time to hit the hardwood and roll out the basketballs. The Brownfield Lady Cubs are eager to make a significant impact this season as head coach Ja’Lee Floyd begins her second year in charge. Last season, the Lady Cubs finished with an 11-20 record. Notably, 15 of those 20 losses came against playoff teams, ranked teams, and district champions. With a few calls going Brownfield’s way, they could have secured more wins. Despite the challenges, the Lady Cubs achieved a valuable milestone by winning a gold ball after defeating Kermit 59-36 in the Bi-District round. Following that victory, they advanced to the Texan Dome in Levelland to face the perennial regional powerhouse Shallowater, where they lost 66-41. However, had the third quarter not gone as it did, the Lady Cubs might have pulled off an upset.

Now we move on to this season. The Lady Cubs welcome back eight players from last season’s varsity team. They are Janah Burns, Allyson Guzman, Yesenia Mata, Brynlee Morin, Mariah Perez, Kayleigh Saldana, Caylee Stell, and Reagyn Watkins. Coach Floyd added Auryana Davis to the mix. Coach Floyd also named Saldana, Mata, and Guzman as team captains.

Coach Floyd has emphasized the importance of reducing turnovers this season. The team has been focusing on ball control and mastering layups. The Lady Cubs possess a lot of speed this year, which they plan to leverage, especially when executing the press.

So far, the Lady Cubs are 0-2. They lost at home to #7 (1A) Borden County by eight points, 54-46, last Saturday, and then lost at home to Hale Center, 44-32, on Tuesday, November 11th. The Lady Cubs will travel to South Lubbock to take on the Liberty Patriots on Friday, November 14th.

Brownfield will return home on November 18th to host New Deal. After that, they will travel to Dimmitt for the Dimmitt Tournament. On Monday, November 24th, they will host the new Frenship Memorial High School before breaking for Thanksgiving. After the break, on Tuesday, December 2nd, the Lady Cubs will travel to Farwell to face a tough Lady Blue team. Following that, on December 5th, Brownfield will host #10 Whitharral.

The week of December 8th will be busy for the Lady Cubs as they begin district action at home against Stanton on Tuesday, December 9th. Then, as Thursday approaches, they will participate in the Hoopin’ Cub Classic at home. After a long week of basketball, the Lady Cubs will head to Monahans on Tuesday, December 16th, followed by their second district game against Denver City on Friday, December 19th.

The Lady Cubs will take a 10-day break before heading to the Caprock Tournament held in Lubbock. Brownfield will compete in the small school bracket alongside 31 other teams, eight of which rank in the top 25. After celebrating the New Year, the Lady Cubs will face Clarendon in Hale Center on January 2nd.

On Tuesday, January 6th, the Lady Cubs will return to district action, hosting Odessa Compass, and will travel to Lamesa on Friday, January 9th. The following week, Brownfield will host #23 Coahoma for Teacher Appreciation Night on Tuesday, January 13th, before heading to Crane to complete the first round of district action on Friday, January 16th.

Next, the Lady Cubs will start the second half of their district schedule by visiting Stanton on Tuesday, January 20th. On Friday, January 23rd, they will have a bye week. After some rest, Brownfield will host the Pink Out Game against Denver City on Tuesday, January 27th, and then travel to Odessa to face Compass on Friday, January 30th.

As the season progresses into February, the Lady Cubs have three district and regular-season games left. They will host Lamesa in the Blackout Game on Tuesday, February 3rd, travel to Coahoma on Friday, February 6th, and finish district play at home for Senior Night on Tuesday, February 9th.
