The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs concluded their last season with an outcome far from what they anticipated, losing to Bushland, 59-51, in the Area Round of the playoffs. In reality, nine times out of ten, that game should have been a clear victory for them. However, that’s in the past, and we now look forward to a new season.
The Runnin’ Cubs will be led by District MVP and All-State Senior Jeron Lawrence, who scored the most points last season and will be a key figure in the team’s strategy on the court. Also returning this season are 1st Team All-District Senior Kameron Gibson and Senior Trae Timmins. Adding to the team’s leadership are 2nd Team All-District Senior Braylon “B-Money” Bruno, Senior John Fields, and Senior Kanyon Cantrell.
Almost every team in District 3-3A, except for Denver City, will return most of its players, making district competition much more challenging. Additionally, the Runnin’ Cubs will face a brutal non-district schedule, which should prepare them for district and postseason play. Coach McPherson stated, “It will take us a while to start playing to our potential due to those tough teams early in the year. We will be small again and will have to play much more physically than we have in the past to compete.”
The non-district schedule is as follows: Brownfield has already played its first game against TAPPS 5A #3 Lubbock Trinity Christian, losing 78-54, shortly after many players finished their football season. Their second non-district game is at home on Tuesday, November 18th, against #4 Estacado (4A). On November 21st, they will travel to Hobbs, New Mexico, to face a tough Eagles team that finished #2 in New Mexico last season, although they have not yet played a game this season.
The following week, the Runnin’ Cubs will have consecutive games, hosting the new Frenship Memorial (which will play 4A this season) on November 24th, then traveling to Lubbock on the 25th to take on 5A Coronado. After taking a Thanksgiving break, they will return on December 2nd to face #4 Slaton. Subsequently, Brownfield will compete in the Gene Messer Classic at Frenship High School, where they will be the smallest school participating in the tournament.
In the second week of December, on the 9th, Brownfield will travel south to face 6A Odessa High and then return home for the Brownfield Hoopin’ Cub Classic. The following week, the Runnin’ Cubs will host 1A #9 Whitharral. On December 19th, they will begin district action at Denver City, followed by a 10-day holiday break.
Coming back from the break, the Runnin’ Cubs will embark on a seven-and-a-half-hour trip southeast to Corpus Christi to participate in the West Oso Tournament. After the tournament, they will have a five-day break before starting district play again by hosting Odessa Compass. They will finish that week with an away game at Lamesa.
In the second week of January, the Runnin’ Cubs will host Coahoma on the 13th, then travel to Crane on the 16th. The following week, they will visit Stanton on the 20th to complete the first round of district play. They will have a much-needed rest on Friday, January 23rd, as this is their bye week.
Entering the fourth week of January, the Runnin’ Cubs will start the second round of district action by hosting Denver City on January 27th and traveling south to Odessa to face Compass on Friday, January 30th. In the first week of February, they will host Lamesa on the 3rd and then travel to Coahoma on the 6th. In the second week of February, the Runnin’ Cubs will wrap up district play at home against Crane on February 10th, which will be senior night, and their final game of the regular and district season will be at home against Stanton.n on Friday the 13th.
