Brownfield Lady Cub Basketball

Lady Cubs Set to Open District Play in One of the State’s Toughest Districts

The Brownfield Lady Cubs remain competitive, but they continue searching for more wins as they navigate one of the region’s most demanding early-season schedules. Now 2–9, Brownfield’s record doesn’t tell the whole story. Of their nine losses, five have come against top-25 programs spanning classifications from 4A down to 1A. The remaining four losses were to a large and athletic 4A squad, two strong winning teams—including one that arguably belongs in the top-25—and a battle-tested New Deal team.

Tonight, the Lady Cubs open district competition, hosting Stanton at 6:00 p.m. in the high school gym. What amplifies the challenge ahead is the strength of their district, which features three state-ranked opponents: Coahoma (#7), Lamesa (#12), & Denver City (#25)

With such a daunting district slate ahead, getting off to a strong start tonight is crucial. A win against Stanton would give the Lady Cubs valuable momentum before shifting their focus to the Hoopin’ Cub Classic Basketball Tournament, which begins Thursday. Brownfield has already shown resilience against elite competition, and a strong opening-night performance could set the tone for the battles ahead.

Brownfield Runnin’ Cub Basketball

Runnin’ Cubs Surge Into Top 10 After Challenging Early Schedule

The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs opened their season with a 0–3 start, facing a brutal early schedule that included #3 Lubbock Trinity Christian (TAPPS 5A), #4 Estacado (4A), and Hobbs, NM (5A)—a program widely regarded as one of the strongest in New Mexico. But the slow start didn’t last long.

The Runnin’ Cubs quickly flipped the script, igniting a five-game winning streak that featured victories over 4A Frenship Memorial, 5A Lubbock Coronado, and a statement win over #4 Slaton (3A). They carried that momentum into the Gene Messer Classic, where they rolled past 5A Wichita Falls Legacy and 6A Rockwall Heath, earning a spot in the championship bracket. Brownfield ultimately dropped its final two games, falling to 5A Monterey and #17 West Plains (4A).

Despite sitting at 5–5, the strength of their schedule and quality wins vaulted the Runnin’ Cubs into the Class 3A top-25, landing at an impressive #4 this week. Tonight, Brownfield hits the road to face 6A Odessa High, a matchup that will test their depth and resilience. They will then return home for their own tournament, opening against #13 Lorenzo (1A). Unlike the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs won’t begin district action until December 19, when they face Denver City.

With battle-tested experience and momentum on their side, Brownfield looks poised to make noise as the season rolls forward.

Meadow Lady Bronco Basketball

Lady Broncos Look to Regain Momentum Ahead of Swishmass Tourney

The Meadow Lady Broncos opened their season on the right track, and despite a few bumps along the way, they remain headed in a positive direction. Sitting at 8–5, Meadow briefly climbed to #21 in the state rankings before sliding out of the top-25. Several of their losses came against elite competition, including tough matchups with #2 Hermleigh and #3 Westbrook in Class 1A. After battling through a four-game skid, the Lady Broncos bounced back with a much-needed win over O’Donnell on December 6th, setting the tone for a potential turnaround stretch.

Tonight, Meadow hits the road to face Lazbuddie, where they’ll take on the Lady Horns. The Lady Broncos appear well-positioned to pick up another win before returning home for the Meadow Swishmass Basketball Tournament this weekend. In the opening round of the tourney, Meadow will once again face O’Donnell. A victory would advance them to face the winner of Christ the King vs. Seagraves JV, giving the Lady Broncos a chance to build momentum heading into the final weeks of non-district play.

The Lady Broncos won’t begin district competition until early January 2026, giving them valuable time to sharpen their play and reestablish their rhythm before the games matter most.

Wellman-Union Lady Cat Basketball

Lady Cats Aiming to Rebound Ahead of Swishmas Tournament

The Lady Cats (5–7) are looking to rebound after a challenging run in the Whiteface Tournament, where state-ranked Whiteface and #22 Silverton handed them losses. Despite the recent setbacks, Wellman-Union has notched quality wins this season over Dawson, Wilson, and O’Donnell, and has held its own against several strong opponents along the way.

Tonight, the Lady Cats return home to host Southland (0–6). With the matchup favoring Wellman-Union, the Lady Cats have a prime opportunity to regain momentum and build confidence heading into the Meadow Swishmas Basketball Tournament. In the opening round of the tourney, the Lady Cats will take on the Lubbock Titans. A victory would advance them to face the winner of Southland vs. LBK Liberty JV, setting the stage for a potential deep run as they work to find their rhythm moving into the heart of the season.

Meadow Bronco Basketball

Broncos Eye Strong Week as Season Progresses

The Meadow Broncos (9–5), much like their Lady Broncos counterparts, continue to perform well despite a few bumps along the way. Their losses this season have come against competitive opponents, including Motley County, 2A Post, and Hermleigh—the latter defeating Meadow twice, with one matchup going into overtime. It’s also worth noting that several players are still working their way back from football-related injuries, making the Broncos’ early success even more impressive.

Tonight, the Broncos head to Lazbuddie to face the Longhorns. With a win, Meadow should be able to break into double digits in the win column. They’ll close out the week at their home tournament, where a strong showing could push them to 13–5 by Saturday. The Broncos won’t open district play until early January 2026, giving them valuable time to build rhythm, tighten execution, and continue getting key players back to full strength.

Wellman-Union Wildcat Basketball

Wildcats Looking to Build Momentum as Season Continues

The Wellman-Union Wildcats (4–8) have had an up-and-down start to their season. After opening with back-to-back losses, the Wildcats quickly turned things around with two straight wins, showing flashes of the potential they’re capable of. A tough one-point loss to 2A Post stalled their momentum, but the Wildcats bounced back with a solid victory over Wilson. That was followed by a challenging stretch, dropping two in a row to O’Donnell and 2A Whiteface. They responded once again with a win over Silverton, only to be handed another pair of losses—this time by 2A Sudan and 3A Friona.

Tonight, the Wildcats return home to host Southland, who enter the matchup at 0–7. With the way Wellman-Union has been competing, it appears the Eagles may be in for another difficult night as the Wildcats look to protect their home court. Following tonight’s game, the Wildcats will hit the road for the Meadow Swishmas Tournament, where they will open against Seagraves JV in the first round. A win would advance them to face the winner of O’Donnell vs. Christ the King, setting up an opportunity to gain momentum as they move deeper into tournament play. The Wildcats have shown resilience all season, and a strong showing tonight, combined with a solid run at Swishmas, could be precisely what they need to get rolling as the year continues.
