Brownfield Lady Cubs
The Lady Cubs opened last week on a high note, earning their first district victory with a 48–31 win over Odessa Compass. Momentum, however, shifted later in the week when they traveled to Lamesa to face the No. 10 Lady Tors. Brownfield fell 53–29 in that matchup, dropping to 1–3 in district play.
This week presents another tough challenge. On Tuesday night, the Lady Cubs will host No. 2 Coahoma (25–1). The Lady Bulldogs enter the game riding a 19-game winning streak, with their only loss coming against No. 3 Cisco on December 2, 2025. Coahoma returns all but one player from last season’s district championship team. While the task is daunting, if Brownfield can control the tempo and play their style of basketball, an upset is not out of the question.
On Friday evening, the Lady Cubs will travel to Crane to take on the Lady Cranes, who currently sit at 0–4 in district play and could be 0–5 by the time they face Brownfield. This contest marks the final game of the first round of district action, and the Lady Cubs will be looking to finish strong with a victory.

Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs
The Runnin’ Cubs are riding a nine-game winning streak, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Brownfield has been playing outstanding basketball over the past month and a half, continuing to build momentum in district play.
Last week, the Runnin’ Cubs faced the previously undefeated Compass Cougars (15–0) and delivered a dominant 98–52 victory. No. 12 Jeron Lawrence led the way with an impressive 50-point performance. Brownfield then traveled to Lamesa and took care of business with a convincing 58–30 win, improving to 3–0 and securing sole possession of first place in the district standings.
This week, Brownfield will host Coahoma on Tuesday night, January 13. The Bulldogs enter the matchup at 1–1 in district play and 12–5 overall. Their losses have come against quality opponents, including ranked 1A programs Jayton and Valley, along with 2A Hale Center, 3A Roosevelt, and district rival Stanton.
Like the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs will travel to Crane on Friday night. The Crane boys currently sit at 0–2 in district play, with losses to Lamesa and Coahoma. Brownfield will look to maintain its momentum and keep the winning streak intact by the end of the week.

Meadow Lady Broncos
The Lady Broncos split their two games last week. They opened the week with a 52–35 loss to Sudan on Tuesday night, extending a brief two-game skid. However, Meadow bounced back in a big way later in the week with a much-needed district win.
Hosting cross-county rival Wellman-Union, the Lady Broncos delivered a dominant performance, cruising to a 57–26 victory to improve to 1–0 in district play.
This week, Meadow faces a tough challenge on Tuesday night at home against Anton. Anton enters the matchup at 1–0 in district after a convincing 51–20 win over Amherst on Friday. On Friday night, the Lady Broncos will travel to Cotton Center to take on a team that is still searching for its first win of the season and currently sits at 0–1 in district play.
If Alejandra Gonzalez (#1), Jillian Cavazos (#10), Keandra Yannis (#5), and Joey Harrington (#32) continue to perform at a high level, the Lady Broncos should be well positioned for another successful week.
Meadow Broncos
The Meadow Broncos endured a tough week, suffering losses to Grady and then O’Donnell for the third time this season. It is worth noting that two of Meadow’s top five players were unavailable, which played a significant role in those outcomes. Despite the setbacks, there was a bright spot for Bronco basketball.
Senior Kyle Woodard etched his name into the Meadow record books by breaking the school’s all-time rebounding record. Woodard needed 602 rebounds to tie the mark and surpassed it with 607 career rebounds during his two-and-a-half-year high school career.
Looking ahead, the Broncos will face Loop on Tuesday night in a non-district matchup. The Longhorns are 1–10 on the season after reaching the third round of the playoffs last year before falling to Nazareth. On Friday night, Meadow opens district play with a road trip to Cotton Center. While limited information is available on the Elks, they are still searching for their first win of the season.
Wellman-Union Lady Cats
The Lady Cats took off last Tuesday to begin preparations for their district opener, a Friday night matchup at Meadow. Despite their efforts, the Lady Cats were unable to gain momentum in the contest and fell 57–26 in their first district game of the season. The loss drops them to 0–1 in district play and 11–9 overall as they look to regroup and make adjustments moving forward.
The road ahead does not get any easier for the Lady Cats. On Tuesday night, they will return home to face a formidable Whitharral squad ranked No. 9 in the state. The Lady Panthers enter the matchup with a 1–0 district record and a strong 16–7 overall mark, making them one of the top contenders in the district. The Lady Cats will need a disciplined defensive effort and consistent offensive execution to remain competitive against one of the area’s elite programs.
Following Tuesday’s challenge, the Lady Cats will travel to Anton for another demanding district contest. Anton has proven to be a tough environment for visiting teams, and the Lady Cats will look to build on any positives from earlier games as they continue district play. While the schedule is challenging, the Lady Cats remain focused on improving each night and positioning themselves for success as the season progresses.
Wellman-Union Wildcats
The Wildcats put together a solid week, highlighted by a 56–44 victory over Petersburg last Tuesday night. The win showcased the team’s steady progress and ability to execute on both ends of the floor. While the Lady Cats were in action on Friday night, the Wildcats had the evening off, giving them valuable time to rest, recover, and prepare for the upcoming week.
That break will be short-lived, as the Wildcats face a challenging schedule ahead. On Tuesday night, they will travel to Sands for a non-district matchup against the Mustangs. Sands enters the contest with an impressive 16–4 overall record and is riding a five-game winning streak. Based on the strength of their schedule and recent performances, it is somewhat surprising that the Mustangs have yet to crack the state’s top 25 rankings. The Wildcats will need a strong defensive effort and disciplined play to compete against a hot Sands team on its home court.
Following the non-district test, the Wildcats will open district play against Anton. The Bulldogs experienced some losses to graduation, which could present opportunities for the Wildcats to dictate the tempo and establish control early. With momentum from last week and a demanding schedule ahead, the Wildcats will be looking to carry their confidence into district action and set the tone for the remainder of the season.
