The Meadow Lady Broncos are moving on.
Meadow used a dominant third quarter and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to defeat the Grady Lady Cats, 53–48, in the bi-district round of the Class 1A Division I girls basketball playoffs. With the win, the Lady Broncos advance to the Area Round, where they will face a familiar opponent in the Spur Lady Bulldogs.
The playoff matchup with Grady was tightly contested early, as both teams struggled to create separation in the opening half. Defense set the tone in the first quarter, with each team scoring just nine points, resulting in a 9–9 tie after the opening period.
In the second quarter, both offenses began to find more rhythm. Grady managed to edge ahead late in the period, taking advantage of key possessions to build a narrow lead. At halftime, the Lady Cats held a slim 24–22 advantage, leaving the outcome very much in doubt heading into the second half.
That uncertainty didn’t last long.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point of the game, and it was all Meadow. The Lady Broncos exploded offensively while shutting down Grady on defense. Meadow outscored the Lady Cats 18–4 in the quarter, completely flipping the momentum of the game.
Keandra Yannis played a crucial role in the surge, knocking down two timely three-pointers that energized Meadow and stretched the lead. The Lady Broncos’ defense also stepped up, forcing difficult shots and limiting Grady’s opportunities. By the end of the third quarter, Meadow had turned a two-point halftime deficit into a commanding 40–28 lead.
Grady refused to go away quietly.
The Lady Cats mounted a strong push in the fourth quarter, outscoring Meadow 20–13 and applying pressure as the clock wound down. But the Lady Broncos showed composure when it mattered most, especially at the free-throw line. Meadow converted nine of their ten free throw attempts in the final quarter, preventing Grady from completing the comeback and sealing the 53–48 victory.
Balanced scoring helped lead the Lady Broncos to the win. Alejandra Gonzales and Keandra Yannis each scored 18 points, providing consistent offensive production throughout the game. Joey Harrington added 12 points, giving Meadow a strong trio of scorers who delivered when the team needed it most.
With the bi-district victory secured, Meadow now turns its attention to the Area Round, where they will face Spur for the second consecutive season.
Last year’s meeting between the two teams ended in heartbreak for the Lady Broncos, as Spur defeated Meadow 50–42 in a hard-fought contest. Spur would go on to make a deep playoff run, eventually falling to Borden County in the regional finals.
This season, both teams enter the matchup with similar profiles and strong statistical resumes.
Meadow brings a 19–12 overall record into Friday night’s game. The Lady Broncos have been effective on both ends of the court, averaging nearly 53 points per game while allowing just 37 points per contest. Their balanced scoring and defensive discipline have been key factors in their postseason success.
Spur enters the Area Round with a 17–16 overall record but has been particularly strong defensively. The Lady Bulldogs averaged 54 points per game during district play while allowing only 29 points per contest, demonstrating their ability to control games with defense.
Friday night’s showdown at Roosevelt High School, with tipoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m., promises to be another competitive battle between two evenly matched teams.
For Meadow, the keys to victory will be clear. The Lady Broncos must continue their strong free-throw shooting, crash the boards to secure offensive rebounds, and maintain tough defensive pressure in the paint. If Meadow can execute in those areas, they will give themselves an excellent opportunity not only to avenge last season’s loss but to continue their postseason run.
The Lady Broncos have already shown their resilience and ability to rise in big moments. Now, they will look to take the next step and keep their playoff journey alive.
