No. 9 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs Open Playoffs with High Expectations

The No. 9 ranked Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs are headed back to the postseason… and they’re bringing plenty of momentum with them.

Brownfield enters the playoffs with an impressive 26-6 overall record and a perfect 12-0 mark in district play, claiming the District 3-3A championship in dominant fashion. The Cubs also sharpened their edge with a strong 73-62 victory over No. 13 4A Seminole in a postseason tune-up game, sending a clear message that they are ready for another playoff run.

Now, however, the regular season records mean little. It’s win or go home.

A Familiar Playoff Foe

As the top-seeded Division I representative out of District 3-3A, Brownfield will face a familiar opponent in the bi-district round: the Kermit Yellow Jackets. This marks the third consecutive season the two programs have met in the opening round of the playoffs.

In the 2023-2024 season, the Runnin’ Cubs battled past Kermit in a tight 69-64 contest before falling in the next round to Shallowater. Last year, Brownfield entered the playoffs ranked No. 5 in the state with a 25-9 overall record and another perfect 12-0 district finish. The Cubs dominated Kermit 82-29 in bi-district play, but their postseason was cut short the following round with a 59-51 upset loss to Bushland.

This season’s group is determined to write a different ending.

Game Details

Brownfield travels to Seminole on Monday, Feb. 23, to take on Kermit in what promises to be another classic 3A bi-district matchup.

Kermit enters the playoffs with a 16-12 overall record and a 4-4 district mark. While the Yellow Jackets have proven capable of competing, the statistical comparison favors Brownfield.

By the Numbers

During district play, the Runnin’ Cubs averaged an impressive 75 points per game while allowing just 42 — a dominant scoring margin that highlights both offensive firepower and defensive discipline.

In contrast, Kermit averaged 56 points per game and allowed 53, indicating far narrower margins in their contests.

Brownfield also brings a 19-game winning streak into the postseason, a testament to their consistency, depth, and ability to close out games.

The Road Ahead

On paper, the Runnin’ Cubs appear poised to advance. But playoff basketball has a way of rewriting expectations, and Brownfield understands that every possession matters this time of year.

If the Cubs take care of business Monday night, they will advance to face the winner of Dalhart and Littlefield in the area round.

For Brownfield, the goal is clear: survive and advance — and make this postseason run go deeper than the last two.
