Runnin’ Cubs Roll Past Kermit, Set Sights on Dalhart in Area Round

The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs left no doubt Monday night.

With an emphatic 89-37 victory over Kermit, Brownfield captured the Bi-District Championship in dominant fashion, showcasing depth, balance, and relentless defensive pressure from start to finish.

Timmins Takes Charge

When Kermit focused its defensive effort on slowing down Jeron Lawrence — holding him tight and sending him to the free-throw line often — Trae Timmins stepped into the spotlight.

Timmins poured in 27 points and controlled the tempo throughout the night, attacking the basket and knocking down key shots that kept the Yellow Jackets on their heels. His performance set the tone for an offense that simply could not be contained.

Braylon “B-Money” Bruno added 15 points — all from beyond the arc — electrifying the crowd with five three-pointers. John Fields and Lawrence each contributed 10 points, and in a testament to Brownfield’s unselfish play and depth, all ten players on the roster found the scoring column.

Dominance from the Opening Tip

The Runnin’ Cubs wasted no time asserting themselves.

  • First Quarter: Brownfield jumped out to a 19-6 lead, suffocating Kermit defensively while pushing the pace offensively.
  • Second Quarter: The Cubs continued their surge, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 27-10 in the period to take a commanding 46-16 halftime advantage.
  • Third Quarter: Any hopes of a Kermit comeback were quickly erased as Brownfield poured in another 24 points while limiting Kermit to just nine, stretching the lead to 70-25.
  • Fourth Quarter: With the outcome firmly in hand, Coach McPherson turned to his bench. Even then, the Cubs outscored Kermit 19-12 to close out the 52-point victory.

The game was a complete performance — aggressive defense, fast-paced transition offense, crisp ball movement, and balanced scoring.

Area Round Challenge: Dalhart

Now the road gets tougher.

Brownfield will travel north to Amarillo on Friday night, Feb. 27, for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Randall High School, where they will face Dalhart in the Area Round.

Dalhart enters the matchup with an impressive 27-3 overall record and a 9-1 district mark as the District 1-3A Champions. Their only losses came against strong competition: 4A Benbrook (37-26), #4 2A Ropes (57-39), and a narrow 47-45 district defeat to Bushland.

Brownfield, meanwhile, rides a 19-game winning streak into Friday’s contest. The Runnin’ Cubs sit at 26-6 overall and were a perfect 12-0 in district play. Their six losses came against elite competition, including #3 TAPPS 5A Lubbock Trinity, #14 4A Estacado, #10 Hobbs (NM), 5A Monterey, #16 4A West Plains, and #7 Shallowater.

By the Numbers

  • Brownfield: 75 points per game (district & bi-district), allowing 42.
  • Dalhart: 63 points per game (district & bi-district), allowing 40.

While Kermit was overwhelmed by Brownfield’s speed and depth, Dalhart presents a much more disciplined and battle-tested opponent. The Wolves are fundamentally sound, defend well, and won’t be rattled easily.

For the Runnin’ Cubs to keep their postseason run alive, they will need to:

  • Continue pushing the tempo.
  • Maintain their quick, pesky defensive pressure.
  • Win the battle on the boards.
  • Share the basketball and capitalize on open looks.

If Brownfield brings the same intensity and balance displayed Monday night, they will give themselves every opportunity to advance.

The stage is set. The winning streak is alive. And the Runnin’ Cubs are headed to Amarillo with momentum on their side.
