Brownfield Edges Dalhart 58-57 to Capture Area Title, Advances to Regional Semifinals

The ninth-ranked Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs survived a nail-biter Friday night, edging Dalhart 58-57 to capture the Area Championship and punch their ticket to the Region I Semifinals. Now, Brownfield turns its focus to another tough test as the Cubs prepare to face the No. 20 Holliday Eagles on Tuesday night.

A Defensive Battle to the Finish

Friday’s matchup was a grind from start to finish, with both teams locked into a physical, defensive contest. Dalhart set the tone early, outscoring Brownfield 14-9 in the first quarter. Jeron Lawrence opened the scoring for the Cubs with a three-pointer, but Dalhart’s relentless defensive pressure disrupted Brownfield’s offensive rhythm.

The Runnin’ Cubs responded in the second quarter, narrowly outscoring the Wolves 12-11. Despite the effort, Brownfield still trailed 25-21 at halftime in what had become a low-scoring chess match.

Coming out of the break, Brownfield began to dictate the tempo. Slowing the game down and working for quality possessions, the Cubs edged Dalhart 16-13 in the third quarter. Even so, they remained just short of the lead, trailing 38-37 heading into the final frame.

Fourth-Quarter Heroics

The fourth quarter belonged to the Runnin’ Cubs.

Kanyon Cantrell ignited the comeback, drilling a three-pointer to give Brownfield life and eventually the lead. Moments later, Cantrell buried another shot from beyond the arc, swinging the momentum firmly in the Cubs’ favor.

As the intensity ramped up on both ends of the floor, Trae Timmins delivered one of the biggest plays of the night. Fouled while attacking the rim, Timmins finished the layup and converted the free throw for a traditional three-point play, extending Brownfield’s edge. Lawrence also stepped up late, scoring four key baskets in the final period to keep the Cubs in front.

With 22 seconds remaining, Brownfield held a three-point advantage. A foul by Cantrell sent Dalhart to inbound the ball, but the Wolves were not yet in the bonus. Dalhart managed to score on a layup with just two seconds left, trimming the deficit to 58-57. However, time expired before the Wolves could attempt another shot, sealing the dramatic victory for Brownfield.

Lawrence led the way with 24 points, followed by Timmins with 21 and Cantrell adding 12 — including two clutch fourth-quarter three-pointers that proved pivotal.

Regional Semifinal Showdown

With the Area Championship secured, Brownfield now advances to the Region I Semifinals, where they will meet No. 20 Holliday on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Abilene Wylie High School.

Holliday, the District 6-3A champion, enters the contest with an impressive 29-4 overall record and an 11-1 district mark. Their lone district loss came in overtime to Henrietta, 64-59, after defeating the Bearcats 38-32 earlier in district play. The Eagles advanced to the regional round with a 53-49 bi-district win over Breckenridge and a dominant 70-48 Area Championship victory against Comfort.

Statistically, Holliday averages 57 points per game through district play and the postseason while allowing 42. Brownfield boasts a higher-scoring offense, averaging 74 points per game, and allows 43 points per contest.

Keys to the Game

The Eagles are disciplined, balanced, and battle-tested. For Brownfield to continue its postseason run, the Cubs will need to limit turnovers, stay out of foul trouble, and improve their rebounding presence. Controlling the tempo and playing their brand of basketball — aggressive defense paired with efficient offense — will be critical.

If Friday night’s performance proved anything, it’s that this Brownfield team thrives under pressure. With confidence building and momentum on their side, the Runnin’ Cubs now stand just one step away from the Regional Final.
