Runnin’ Cubs Punch Ticket to State Semifinals with Dramatic 56-54 Win Over Shallowater
Just like that, the Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs are headed to the UIL Class 3A Division I State Semifinals. Brownfield secured its spot in the state’s final four after a thrilling 56-54 victory over regional rival Shallowater on Saturday. The win capped off a dramatic comeback and sent the Runnin’ Cubs into their biggest challenge of the season. Next up, Brownfield will face the #1-ranked Dallas Madison Trojans on Tuesday, March 10, at Moody Coliseum on the campus of Abilene Christian University in Abilene.
Slow Start for Brownfield
The Mustangs controlled the early momentum, outscoring Brownfield 15-10 in the first quarter. Of the Cubs’ 10 points, six came from the free-throw line. Jeron Lawrence led the scoring early, going 4-of-6 from the line and adding a layup. Trae Timmins was fouled on a shot and converted both free throws, while Kenyon Cantrell added a basket.
All Five Starters Contribute for Brownfield
Both teams tightened up defensively in the second quarter, each scoring 15 points. All five Brownfield starters contributed during the period. The Cubs found success from beyond the arc as Braylon Bruno, Trae Timmins, and Jeron Lawrence each knocked down three-pointers. John Fields and Cantrell added baskets, while Timmins contributed a two-point field goal to go along with his three. Despite the improved offensive rhythm, Brownfield trailed 30-25 at halftime.
Lawrence Takes Over in the Third
The third quarter belonged to Jeron Lawrence. Both teams again matched each other, scoring 14 points apiece, but Lawrence accounted for all 14 points for Brownfield during the quarter. One of the biggest plays came when Lawrence was fouled while making a three-pointer, completing a four-point play. He repeatedly attacked the basket and forced the Shallowater defense into fouls, going to the line multiple times and finishing the quarter 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Despite his offensive explosion, Shallowater maintained a 44-39 lead heading into the final quarter.
Cubs Rally Late
Brownfield trailed most of the game, but the final minutes turned into a classic playoff finish. With 4:36 remaining, Shallowater extended its lead to 51-43, putting the Cubs in a difficult position. However, Brownfield refused to quit.
With 2:17 left, the Cubs cut the lead to 51-47 after two key baskets. About 40 seconds later, Brownfield capitalized on a Mustang turnover to pull within 51-49. Shallowater answered with another basket to make it 53-49, but Brownfield responded again, trimming the deficit to 53-51.
After Brownfield fouled, Shallowater went to the line for two shots. The Mustangs missed the first but made the second, extending the lead to 5-51. Brownfield advanced the ball past half court and called timeout with a little over 17 seconds left. During the timeout, sophomore John Silva checked into the game, setting up one of the biggest moments of the season.
Out of the timeout, Cantrell inbounded to Lawrence, who was quickly fouled. After another stoppage, the Cubs were finally able to run their play. Lawrence dribbled to the right side of the arc and passed to Timmins at the top. Timmins swung the ball to Cantrell on the left wing, who spotted Silva wide open on the opposite side. Cantrell fired the cross-court pass, and Silva drilled the three-pointer, tying the game 54-54 with just two seconds remaining.
Shallowater called a timeout and inbounded the ball under Brownfield’s basket, but the pass went out of bounds untouched, giving the Cubs the ball under their own goal. On the final play, Cantrell prepared to inbound as Lawrence drew two defenders near the right side of the arc. That left Trae Timmins cutting open inside the lane. Cantrell delivered the pass, and Timmins calmly finished the game-winning jumpshot, giving Brownfield the dramatic 56-54 victory.
Scoring Leaders
Brownfield was led by Jeron Lawrence with 31 points, Trae Timmins with 9 points, and Kanyon Cantrell with 8 points
State Semifinal Showdown
Now the Runnin’ Cubs face their toughest challenge yet against #1 Dallas Madison. The Trojans bring impressive size to the court, featuring two players standing 6’10”, two at 6’4”, one at 6’3”, two at 6’2”, and four at 6’1”. Madison enters the semifinal with a 24-12 overall record and a perfect 14-0 district record (12 played games, with two forfeits).
Many of Madison’s losses came against significantly larger schools. They competed in high-level tournaments, including the Mansfield Spring Creek Tournament, facing teams such as 6A Little Elm, Denton Ryan, Arlington Sam Houston, and Midlothian. The Trojans also played in the prestigious Tarkanian Classic in Nevada and the Dallas ISD Dr. Pepper Classic, facing several strong programs, including Cedar Hill and Episcopal School of Dallas.
Cubs Battle-Tested
Brownfield has also faced a challenging schedule. Early-season losses came against strong teams, including state-ranked TAPPS 5A Trinity Christian, #4 Estacado, and #7 Hobbs. The Cubs later defeated Friendship Memorial, Coronado, Slaton, and tournament wins over Wichita Falls Legacy and Rockwall-Heath during the Gene Messer Classic. Brownfield also captured the Corpus Christi Oso Tournament championship, going 4-0 during the Christmas break.
Streaks and Statistics
Both teams enter the semifinal with impressive winning streaks. Dallas Madison is on an 18-game winning streak, whereas Brownfield is on a 23-game winning streak
Statistically, the teams are remarkably similar defensively. Madison averages 84 points per game in district play and 83 in the playoffs, while allowing 43 points in district and 51 in the postseason. Brownfield averaged 75 points per game in district and 66 in the playoffs, while also allowing 43 points in district and 51 in the playoffs.
Keys for Brownfield
Saturday’s win over Shallowater was a major test, but the road only gets tougher. Madison’s size and offensive firepower present a serious challenge. For the Runnin’ Cubs to advance, they will need to maintain their aggressive defensive pressure. Allow Jeron Lawrence to attack the basket and draw fouls, plus, hit timely three-point shots. Probably the most difficult will be the battle on the rebounds against Madison’s size
If Brownfield can execute in those areas, the Runnin’ Cubs may have a chance to pull off another postseason thriller and punch their ticket to the state championship game.
