Officials to be sworn in, leadership selected, and major policy items addressed
The Brownfield City Council will meet Thursday morning, May 7, 2026, at 7:30 a.m. inside City Hall Council Chambers to take up a full agenda that includes certification of the recent municipal election, the swearing-in of elected officials, and discussion of several important city matters.
One of the first major items on the agenda will be the canvass of the May 2, 2026 General Election. During this process, council members will review and officially certify the results of the election. Following certification, newly elected officials will be administered the oath of office, formally beginning their terms.
The council will also move to elect a Mayor Pro-Tem, a position that serves as a key leadership role within the governing body. Additional organizational items include the announcement of board openings and consideration of recipients for the 2026 City Council Scholarship.
A significant portion of the meeting will focus on a proposed ordinance related to a citizen initiative petition. The ordinance would outlaw abortion within the city and declare Brownfield a “Sanctuary City for the Unborn.” The council will conduct a formal reading of the ordinance, hold a public hearing, and then consider possible action, which could include adopting the ordinance or ordering an election for voters to decide the matter.
Public safety and municipal operations will also be highlighted with quarterly reports from the Brownfield Fire Chief and the Municipal Court Judge. These updates will provide insight into calls for service, staffing, operations, case loads, and court activity.
Council members will also consider a funding request from the Terry County Rodeo Association for hotel occupancy tax funds to support the 2026 Terry County Crossroads Stampede Rodeo, scheduled for July 9–12.
The meeting may also include an executive session for consultation with the city attorney regarding potential or pending litigation, followed by any necessary action upon return to open session.
As always, residents are encouraged to attend and participate, particularly during the public comment portion of the meeting for agenda items.
